Micron's new US research hub could influence how future AI systems are built, stored, and scaled, with implications that extend well beyond America. The planned US$10 billion effort targets breakthroughs in memory, advanced packaging, and new compute architectures that may shape global technology supply chains, energy use, and access to smarter devices.Micron Technology said on August 20 it has unveiled Micron Research Labs, a Boise-based research institution backed by a planned US$10 billion investment over the next decade. The company said the center will bring together academia, government, startups, customers, and industry partners to pursue long-term advances in memory and compute technologies.
The initiative is being positioned as the first dedicated memory research hub in the US. Micron said the effort will center on a flagship campus in Boise, with university partnerships, satellite labs, and ecosystem collaborations designed to support research beyond current technology roadmaps.
Chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said the investment is intended to prepare for the memory and compute systems that future AI applications will require. He added that Micron, the only US-based manufacturer of leading-edge memory, has separately committed more than US$250 billion to manufacturing and research and development in the US.
The company said Micron Research Labs will focus on critical memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing. It also aims to train the next generation of memory researchers and technology leaders.
Micron said it expects to break ground in calendar 2027 on a facility in Boise that could host hundreds of researchers and serve as a venue for conferences, workshops, and innovation forums.
The announcement drew support from executives at Nvidia, Apple, Applied Materials, and Lam Research, as well as academic and industry groups, who said the project could strengthen US semiconductor capabilities and accelerate AI-related breakthroughs.
Micron said the research hub builds on its global footprint across the US, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan and is intended to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into commercial technologies.
